The first tour dates that Kasim Sulton will be playing with Todd Rundgren in November have been announced.

This tour is called Todd Rundgren's Utopia and is based on the gigs played in January to raise money to help Moogy Klingman's medical expenses as he battled cancer. For this tour Todd's band will be Kevin Ellman, Jesse Gress, Moogy Klingman, Ralph Schuckett and John Siegler as well as Kasim.

Thursday 3rd - Sunrise Theater, Ft. Pierce, FL
Saturday 5th - Capitol Theater, Clearwater, FL

2 new Todd Rundgren gigs for Kasim Sulton

Two new Todd Rundgren gigs have been added which Kasim Sulton and the other members of his band will be playing when they are in UK in October.

Both gigs are on Saturday 8th October and are at Ronnie Scott's in London. They will play at 8.30pm until 9.45pm and then a separate show will be from midnight until 1.15am.

It was not advertised in advance but apparently Kasim Sulton was one of the musicians who performed at the Glen Burtnik's Xmas Xtravaganza on Saturday 18th December at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ.

The Glen Burtnik's Xmas Xtravaganza is an annual event (this was the 20th one) which "benefits area food banks and other worthwhile charities." Each year Glen gets together a (large!) batch of musicians to perform either individually or as groups and Kasim joins in which ever year he is free. He was advertised to appear last year but was unable to get there due to a heavy fall of snow.

Tonight Kasim Sulton plays a solo gig at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. This will be Kasim's first appearance at this venue. The address of the venue is 1039 Washington Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030.

Doors to the gig tonight open at 6.30pm with the opening act, Laura Cheadle (who describes herself as "not just a thoughtful singer-songwriter, and not just a soulful funk diva, musician Laura Cheadle offers audiences a lively performance filled with upbeat introspection"), starting at 7.30pm. Kasim is expected to take the stage at about 8.30pm.

The organizer of Kasim Sulton's solo gig in Joplin, MO last Saturday evening has some T-shirts available to purchase with all proceeds going to the Animal Adoption and Resource Center which Kasim played the gig in aid of.

The T-shirts are white with a black and white picture on the front of the logo for the gig (as pictured below). The T-shirts are 100% cotton and come in the sizes small, medium, large and extra large. They cost $12 within the US and $15 outside the US including postage.

As previously posted, Kasim Sulton will be making an appearance at the Weekend Of 100 Rock Stars in East Rutherford, NJ during the weekend of Friday 30th July to Sunday 1st August.

I have now heard from the event who have said that Kasim will be appearing on the Saturday and Sunday. They say "He will be part of a main-stage panel discussion on one of those days, and he will be part of an on-stage question and answer interview session the other day (we haven't established exactly which day for which).
Best of all, he will be playing Saturday and Sunday night at the ROCK CON all-star jams, where he will be performing along with some of our other celebrity guests of honor. Expect him to do songs he's never done live on stage before!
When not on stage, Kasim will be at his table meeting fans, taking photos and signing autographs."

There's no interview date but it seems quite recent and Kasim answers questions on the various instruments he plays, working with Todd Rundgren and Meat Loaf, playing live and his solo band.

One great quote from Kasim in the interview is "Playing in front of an audience is a very exciting thing.You only get one chance to play and sing a song. And although you'd rather not make them, mistakes are a given. That's the beauty of a live performance. I get inspired playing in front of a crowd of people. Wether they realize it or not, they encourage me to give my all, to sing and play the best I possibly can. Also, there is something about seeing the faces of the people as you perform. It was also announced yesterday that Todd would be playing two gigs in New Zealand in late September which it appears that Kasim will also be playing. All of these gigs are based on a Robert Johnson set.

This morning Kasim Sulton was interviewed on Radio Quartz which is a radio station based in Belgium which also streams on the Internet.

Before Kasim's interview This Must Be Love and Watching The World Go By were played and afterwards Heaven Help The Child and Meat Loaf's single Los Angleloser (which Kasim also plays on).

Kasim spoke about what he has been doing in the past year (since he was last interviewed on the station), why he left Meat Loaf's band and his future plans.

The best quote of the interview was when Kasim was talking about his own solo music and gigs and said "I plan to contiune to do that well into the future."

This morning at about 11.30am Kasim Sulton was on a show called Eight West on WOOD TV 8 (NBC). The two hosts spoke briefly to Kasim and then he played Sacrifice live in the studio. Click here to see a video of his appearance.

About two hours later Kasim was also interviewed on the radio station WYCE 88.1FM. He played Watching The World Go By in the studio and Michael Crittenden (who will be opening for Kasim tomorrow) was also there and played a song. Click here and here to listen to this interview.

Both of these appearances were to promote his gig in Grand Rapids on Saturday evening.

In the past hour Kasim Sulton has confirmed a solo gig in Somerville, MA (Boston) for Tuesday 25th May. The gig is at Johnny D's where Kasim played a gig in May 2008.

Tonight an interview with Kasim Sulton was broadcast on the community radio station HFM based in Market Harborough, a town in Leicestershire, England. The show was called the Kendall and Stu's Radio Show and unfortunately sounded like a community radio station! On the plus side they played several Utopia and Kasim-related tracks.

Kasim played for almost exactly 90 minutes to a very full room. It was a light hearted gig that everybody really enjoyed.

Highlights of the set were the Jason Faulkner song Afraid Himself To Be making a return to his set list after about five years, an a cappella version of Does Anybody Love You and an audience participation performance of Libertine.

Last night at his gig in Philadelphia, PA, Kasim Sulton announced on stage that he was no longer a member of Meat Loaf's band.

Kasim joined the band in 1993 and became his Musical Director in 1998. Prior to that Kasim played on Bat Out Of Hell and is the only artist other than Meat Loaf who appears on each of the tracks of the Bat Out Of Hell trilogy of albums.

Kasim said last night that he is on some of the tracks of Meat Loaf's new album which is released later this year (and which Kasim thinks is a great album) and that he wished Meat Loaf all the best for his career.

Todd Rundgren / Utopia book to be published on 12/15

The second volume of Billy James's biography about Todd Rundgren called A Dream Goes On Forever - The Continuing Story Of Todd Rundgren is scheduled for publication on Tuesday 15th December. This volume covers the Utopia years (up until 1985) and features Kasim Sulton quite prominently as Billy interviewed him at length for the book.

The book will be available on the publishers website (Golden Treasures Publishing) and later on Amazon.com. Only 2,000 hardback copies are being produced at a cost of $39.95 each. The softcover will be released at the same time and will cost $29.95.

The book is 394 pages in length and includes 12 pages of color photos as well as black and white ones throughout the book.

Kasim Sulton will be playing a solo acoustic gig at Molly Malones in Los Angeles, CA on Thursday 3rd December.

This will be a solo accoustic set (no band) and tickets are either $13 in advance (recommended) or $15 on the door. This will be Kasim's first gig at this venue and his first solo gig in Los Angeles since 1981.

The time of this gig has not been confirmed yet .

Alsp The Kasim Sulton Band's gig at The M Room in Philadelphia, PA that was to have been played on Sunday 6th December has been moved back two weeks to 10pm on Sunday 20th December.

Tickets for the 12/6 date will be valid for the revised date or refunds are available from the point of purchase.

Kasim Sulton will be on The Joey Reynolds Show on the WOR radio station in New York City from 2am on Wednesday (7th) morning (late Tuesday night). The station broadcasts on 710kHz plus it streams on the Internet.

Kasim will be interviewed and is expected to play at least one song live in the studio again.

Kasim Sulton has named his band for his gigs! They are Mark Alexander on piano, Mike Chiavaro on bass and Tad McCully on drums.

Mark Alexander played with Kasim and Doug Kennedy a couple of years ago at Kasim's solo gigs but the biggest surprise to this line-up must be that Kasim has recruited another musician to play bass. Whether that means that Kasim will play keyboards or just concentrate on vocals will make this mix very interesting!

Today an exhibit about Todd Rundgren and Utopia opens on the second floor of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

As well as the Todd Rundgren items listed in the press release, a large amount of the exhibit is about Utopia with Kasim Sulton, Roger Powell and Willie Wilcox being well represented too. On Monday at 1pm Kasim, Todd and Roger will be making an appearance at the exhibit which anyone can attend.

The exhibit contains some items donated by Todd as well as contributions from lots of his fans and has become possible due to the kind generosity and hard work by RMAC.

Bat Out Of Hell is the 4th best selling album of all time

The Meat Loaf / Jim Steinman album Bat Out Of Hell has risen to four place in the best selling album charts of all time. (Kasim Sulton played bass sang background vocals on the album.)

Last year the album was at number five but sales of Bat Out Of Hell have increased this year so it has swapped places with The Eagles Greatest Hits album.

Apparently Bat Out Of Hell has sold just under 44 million copies worldwide since it was released in 1977.

Kasim Sulton (Meat Loaf) in the UK Album Charts

Meat Loaf's latest compilation album Hits Out Of Hell has dropped from #10 to #27 in the Official UK Album Charts. (This is in part due to there being five Michael Jackson albums in the chart this week.)

Kasim Sulton plays bass and sings background vocals on several tracks on this album.

According to a post on a fan forum, last week the album sold 7,847 copies which was 57% down on the previous week. Total sales for the album are 375,994.

There was an extensive television advertising campaign for this album up until this week.
